Tom Marvolo Riddle’s mother, Merope, was a member of the Gaunt family and thus one of the last remaining descendants of Salazar Slytherin – she was a Parselmouth, an ability she passed to her son. The Gaunts also had a history of mental instability, due to inbreeding. Merope grew obsessed with a local muggle, the land-owning Riddle heir, and brewed an illegal love potion. Under the influence of the potion, Tom Riddle (Senior) was persuaded to marry her, and they conceived a son. However, Merope, believing Tom had come to love her on his own, stopped dosing him with the potion. Tom abandoned her and her unborn child in disgust, retreating to his parent’s house.

On New Year’s Eve 1926, Merope Gaunt stumbled to a muggle orphanage and gave birth to her son – Tom for his father, Marvolo for her father, and Riddle for the surname she felt she should retain. Merope died within the hour of his birth, leaving him alone in a London orphanage.

Growing up in the orphanage, Tom soon learnt that he was not like the other children. He could talk to snakes, and used psychokinetic powers – mainly to enact revenge on older orphans who tried to bully him. He grew up bitter and isolated, unable to associate with other people or understand their emotions.

When he was 11 years old, Tom was accepted into Hogwarts where he was sorted, predictably enough, into Slytherin. Dumbledore, who met Riddle to explain magic in his role as Deputy Headmaster, was suspicious of his motives throughout his time at Hogwarts. However, Tom was charismatic and popular, eventually becoming Head Boy – despite the fact that his extra-curricular activities included commanding a basilisk to kill a young muggleborn witch.

In his sixth year, Tom managed to pry information from his potions professor, Horace Slughorn, about a dark and dangerous route towards immortality – Tom’s dearest goal. However, as the construction of a Horcrux (an external container to store part of the wizard’s soul) required murder, he was forced to wait until after he left Hogwarts to achieve his goal.

Returning to the orphanage for the last time after his seventh year at Hogwarts, incensed at his rejection for the DADA post, Tom kidnapped a matron who had neglected him throughout his childhood. Taking her to the Little Hangleton graveyard where his family lay buried, he set about the preparations for the creation of a Horcrux using his school diary. But as he took her blood and began to paint the ground with the necessary runes, something strange occurred…

The next morning, a horrified muggle police department would find a bloodless corpse lying on a red-streaked grave, an empty diary flipping pages in the wind beside the headstone. They never would find the murderer – or the weapon responsible.
